A Prairie Village resident’s quick thinking Sunday and a few calls from the mayor’s office helped make Christmas merrier for a number of metro-area families in need.

Susan Bruce was on a walk by Porter Park Sunday morning and was surprised to see the tree recycling area set up by the city in the parking lot chock full a week before Christmas. One of the local tree lots had closed up shop early for the season, and discarded 132 perfectly good Christmas trees.

Bruce called friend Nancy Wallerstein, who got in touch with mayor Ron Shaffer. After making a few calls to local agencies, Shaffer was able to help arrange the delivery of the trees to Crosslines, a Kansas City, Kan. community aid organization, on Monday.

“We had word that people were literally waiting there when the truck came to take the trees home,” Shaffer said.

Shaffer complimented Bruce and Wallerstein for acting to make good use of the trees.

“Just some observant citizens looking out for the best for our community,” Shaffer said.
