The Shawnee Mission Post is a hyperlocal news site covering schools, government, events and business inside the I-435 loop in Johnson County, Kansas. Our goal is for the Shawnee Mission Post to be the place residents turn to find out what’s happening in their community — but we need your help! See something you’d like to have us take a look into? Have an event you’d like to promote? Have a great picture you’d like to share with our readers? Send your story ideas, photos and tips to stories [at] shawneemissionpost.com.
Who runs the site
The Shawnee Mission Post is run by the husband and wife team of Jay Senter and Julia Westhoff, who met while working on their college newspaper in Madison, Wis. The two were serving as Peace Corps volunteers in Panama when they found out Julia was pregnant with their first child, and they decided to move back to Jay’s hometown of Prairie Village. When they returned, they noticed local news sources were no longer providing consistent coverage of local government and schools in northeast Johnson County. So in June 2010, they launched a website — then called the Prairie Village Post — to fill that gap.
With the help of publisher emeritus Dan Blom, the couple was able to turn the site into a thriving small business that has become the most-turned-to source of information about what’s happening in northeast Johnson County.
