Faculty, students and staff explored the newly remodeled CLB building during a recent Open House event. Science labs in this building are now equipped with state-of-the-art and modern technologies.
In 2016, the JCCC Board of Trustees approved a Campus Transformation Plan to ensure JCCC buildings and facilities would continue to support student success and prepare the future local workforce. The updates created modern learning environments, increased the number of collaborative spaces and upgraded classroom technologies to support the College’s mission and culture.
Completed campus upgrades focus on student success
Today, students benefit from the exceptional Fine Arts & Design Studios, the state-of-the-art Hugh L. Libby Career and Technical Education Center, a renovated Gymnasium and an updated Welding, Construction and Machining Technology building.
The Campus Transformation Plan included upgrades that extended beyond new buildings. The Student Center was enhanced with a newly built circle drive, “front door” and main entrance that directs and welcomes students to campus. The remodeled Student Center also includes a new welcome desk where Admissions Ambassadors are available to answer questions about the admissions process and available student services.
All three floors of the Billington Library were also updated. JCCC’s Academic Resource Centers, which provide students with free tutoring and support in all academic areas, were relocated to the building’s first floor to make it easier for students to access. Many student-facing services were moved to the lower floors of campus buildings to provide direct access and easier wayfinding for students.
Additionally, JCCC’s outdoor athletics complex was updated to provide state-of-the-art facilities and sports fields, making JCCC a premier school for student athletes.
Current construction incorporates the latest technology for students
Now, more than six years since the plan was adopted, crews are finishing the remodeling and reconstruction of the Classroom Laboratory Building (CLB), which houses Chemistry, Physics, Physical Science, Geology, Astronomy and Dental Hygiene labs. The building’s updated spaces now offer modern and flexible learning environments that include cutting-edge technologies to help students develop their skills.
While CLB updates are nearly complete, construction crews have simultaneously been working on a complete remodel of the adjoining Science building (SCI), which includes Environmental Science classes and Biology labs.
An exciting part of this aspect of the transformation project is the creation of spaces dedicated to undergraduate research, which is a crucial component to STEM education. Students can use these centers to increase the scope and types of projects they work on.
“Providing these opportunities to our students puts us at the forefront of community college education and gives our students skills and experiences that will serve them well in the future,” said Mary Wisgirda, Dean of Mathematics and Science.
