Drivers in Fairway may have noticed — and residents in that pocket of northeast Johnson County may have heard — some major construction work happening along Shawnee Mission Parkway. Or deconstruction, as it were.
Driving the news: The work is to demolish the Fairway Corporate Center at 4210 and 4220 Shawnee Mission Parkway, near the new Starbucks that is on the former Stroud’s site.
Months later, the city created a tax increment financing district for the area which helped open up the possibility of development at the vacant office complex.
The planning commission approved the “active adult” site plan in May.
The plan calls for apartments between 700 square feet to 1,600 square feet with one or two bedrooms, totaling 250,000 square feet on the 5.3 acre site.

Fairway City Administrator Nathan Nogelmeier told the Post via email that the performance milestones, as laid out in the development agreement, calls for the demolition of the existing center during the end of the third quarter of 2022.
Construction of the new apartments is set to begin by the end of this year.
“Substantial completion” should be done by the end of the second quarter of 2025, Nogelmeier said.
