There are 16 Shawnee Mission seniors who have been named semifinalists for prestigious National Merit scholarships for the 2022-23 school year.

Why it matters: This national competition offers scholarship opportunities to thousands of graduating seniors totaling nearly $28 million.

How to qualify: These Shawnee Mission students took the preliminary SAT in 2021, Superintendent Michelle Hubbard said at the Sept. 19 board of education meeting.

  • Students who take the PSAT are automatically screened for the National Merit Scholarship program.
  • More than 16,000 students nationwide who are among the highest scoring entrants in their respective states make it to the semifinals.
  • Finalists are then selected from the pool of semifinalists, and scholarship award winners are ultimately selected from that finalist pool.

Key quote: “Out of 1.5 million test takers, only 16,000 were named semifinalists,”Hubbard said at the board meeting. “These students now have the opportunity to advance in competition for nearly $28 million in scholarship offers next spring.”

SM South had six National Merit Semifinalists this year.
