New rose garden opens in Shawnee’s West Flanders Park

Shawnee Parks & Recreation and Johnson County Master Gardeners are celebrating Parks & Recreation Month by offering a tour of the new rose garden in West Flanders Park.

Located on the northwest corner of West 55th Street and Nieman Road, the rose garden is a product of efforts by local master gardeners. The tour is open from 9 to 11 a.m., during which park patrons can ask gardeners questions and learn more about the garden and their program.

Johnson Drive shutting down part of Thursday for Shawnee’s next Moonlight Market on Thursday

The city of Shawnee is hosting another Moonlight Market from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 15, in the downtown area at Johnson Drive and Nieman Road.

As part of the market, the city is shutting down Johnson Drive in both directions between King Avenue and Nieman Road from 2 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 15. Drivers will still be able to access both King and Nieman, and detours will be marked.

The market will feature more than 30 vendors, yard games, live music, a water slide for children and Mad Science to make slime. More details at cityofshawnee.org/moonlightmarket.

Cedar Roe reopens with new HVAC system

Cedar Roe Library in Roeland Park reopened on June 21, according to a city newsletter.

The library was closed for a couple of months for upgrades to its HVAC system. It also received new shelving and a new building layout, according to a city newsletter.
