Updates from Johnson County Community College: Spotlight on JCCC sports

JCCC's women’s Volleyball team won the 2020-21 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) D-II Championship.

The well-rounded college experience at Johnson County Community College includes several award-winning athletics programs. The 2020-21 season is proving to be a monumental year for JCCC Athletics.

Volleyball

The women’s Volleyball team won the 2020-21 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) D-II Championship and finished the season with a 27-2 record. This marks the team’s first national championship win since 2005.

Coach Jennifer Ei has led nine teams to the national tournament in her 13-year tenure and is currently one of the most successful coaches in the NJCAA. After coaching the Cavaliers to the Championship title, Coach Ei was also named the NJCAA Division II Volleyball Coach of the Year.

Golden Girls Dance Team

The JCCC Golden Girls dance team attended the 2021 National Dance Alliance (NDA) Collegiate Championship and competed in the Open Jazz and Open Hip-Hop Divisions against two-year colleges and D-III universities nationwide.

This was the first Golden Girls appearance in the Jazz Division, and they earned third place in the finals. They finished second in the Hip-Hop Division, tying the team’s highest placement from 2017.

The JCCC Men’s Basketball team completed their eighth appearance at the NJCAA D-II National Tournament.

Men and Women’s Basketball

First-year head coach Rand Chappell led the JCCC Men’s Basketball team to this year’s NJCAA D-II National Tournament. After a close game, the Cavaliers fell just short of the win and wrapped up the season 16-6. This was JCCC’s eighth national tournament appearance and the first for Coach Chappell. We look forward to cheering on the team next season!

The JCCC Women’s Basketball team finished their regular season undefeated, won a conference title and ranked number one in the NJCAA Division II. Unfortunately, their run at a third national championship fell short by only four points. The team finished with an impressive 22-2 record for the season, and head coach Ben Conrad added a new honor to his mantle – the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association 2-Year Women’s College Coach of the Year.

Baseball and Softball

This season marks a new era for the JCCC baseball program. Long-time assistant coach Eric Horner took the reins as head coach following Kent Shelley’s retirement in 2020. The team is off to a historic start – 41-7 overall and ranked seventh in the country!

The JCCC softball team has been a top-ranked team all season and are currently 25-13 overall and 20-6 in conference play.

The Men’s Soccer team kicked off its season last month at the new JCCC Soccer Complex.

Men and Women’s Soccer

Soccer season kicked off last month in the new JCCC Soccer Complex. The women’s team is 5-6 and had their best offensive match of the season against Garden City Community College. The men’s team is under the direction of new head coach Jeff Cole and currently holds a season record of 2-8 with two matches remaining.

Keep up with the Cavaliers

While we’d love to have fans packed in the stands, due to COVID-19 restrictions, only JCCC approved guests will be admitted to home events. In the meantime, fans can catch live streams on the JCCC Athletics YouTube channel.
