The JCCC COVID-19 Campus Signage Project is part of JCCC’s ongoing effort to keep students, faculty, staff and visitors informed of the new safety measures in place on campus. The project was the result of a collaborative effort between our Incident Response Team (IRT) and Marketing Communications Department.
The design team includes two graphic designers and a copywriter. They were tasked with translating JCCC’s COVID-19 policies and procedures into a clear and concise campus signage campaign.
“We wanted to do this in a way that wasn’t scary or intimidating, but instead made people know that precautions were being taken for the safety of all. That’s why we introduced the tag line ‘Stay safe. Stay smart. Stay healthy.’ It’s found on all our COVID-19 campus signage,” said copywriter Kristi Stanley.
Signs had to be noticeable and clearly convey COVID-19 information and behavior reminders, as well as directions and wayfinding in certain cases.
“Ultimately, we framed the assignment outcome this way—we wanted people to feel safe and be safe. Everyone is scared. We didn’t want our system to overwhelm people or spark more anxiety,” said lead designer Chris Ralston.
JCCC Graphic Design student and Marketing Communications intern, Emily Allphin, handled visual research and sign development. She studied other institutions and found that some were designing their own signage, while others were purchasing pre-made signs from manufacturers. The team had to execute within a tight timeline, but they ultimately wanted the design to look like a natural extension of JCCC’s branding.
We are fortunate to have a print shop on campus equipped with top of the line machinery that can accommodate almost any design. Our Document Services team led the effort on production and also handled installation, often within the same day.
“The time frame this needed be done in probably wouldn’t have been possible without doing it in-house,” said Document Services employee Mike Vochatzer. “The most challenging thing so far has been making sure we have enough of all the materials due to backorders since all other companies are needing these same materials, too.”
Stay Safe. Stay Smart. Stay Healthy.
Nearly 50 different signs related to COVID-19 awareness were created for use across campus including walls, floors, offices, classrooms, restrooms, dining services and seating areas. Many are reminder messages, while some give specific directions.
The signs range from 4-inch wearable buttons to large-scale banners inside the Student Center entrance. These highly visible banners let visitors know that maintaining social distancing, wearing face coverings and engaging in limited activity is expected while on campus.
