SM North alumnus Kyler Zielsdof swears into the U.S. Marine Corps virtually amid pandemic

Kyler Zielsdorf, a 2016 Shawnee Mission North graduate, is now a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Second lieutenants are commissioned officers, and requires a bachelor's degree and graduation from Officer Candidate School.

Shawnee Mission North alumnus Kyler Zielsdorf knew at a young age that he wanted to serve in the United States military. Now, after graduating from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, Zielsdorf is a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.

Zielsdorf’s out-of-state family planned to attend his swearing in ceremony on May 30, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, plans changed. His uncle, who is an officer in the United States Air Force, was supposed to be at the ceremony to present Zielsdorf with his bars. Despite the changes, Zielsdorf said the day still represented the fulfillment of his lifelong dream of becoming a Marine.
