Deadline for candidates to file for elections today at noon

Two significant deadlines for this year’s elections come today at noon.

Today is the deadline for voters to change party affiliation for the August primary. However, unaffiliated voters can choose to affiliate with a party and vote in its primary at any time, including the day of the election.

It’s also the deadline for candidates to file for both local and state/federal offices.

We’ll have a roundup of who’s filed and what the ballots for various races will look like this afternoon.

Lenexa Rec Center reopens June 1 with limited capacity

The Lenexa Rec Center will reopen June 1 with limited capacity and health and safety guidelines in place to reduce the risk of infection from COVID-19.

During this initial phase, only Rec Center members can visit the building. Other measures include one-way foot traffic, hand sanitizing stations, disinfectant wipes to use on equipment before and after workouts.

The Lenexa Rc Center will also close from 1:30 to 3 p.m. each weekday to clean the whole facility. More details here.

Burn victim rescued at Vintage Park Assisted Living in Lenexa

Lenexa Fire Department and Johnson County Med Act on Saturday morning rescued a Lenexa resident suffering a burn injury at Vintage Park Assisted Living. The resident was reported in critical condition and was the only person injured.

Crews were dispatched around 6 a.m. The resident was treated and transported to KU Medical Center.

The building sustained no smoke or fire damage. Some residents required temporary relocation within the facility due to water damage in six apartments from the fire suppression sprinkler system.

Lenexa reported that the fire was determined to be accidental, while the cause remains under investigation.
