SM East choir’s trip to Europe canceled as coronavirus containment efforts increase abroad

The Shawnee Mission East choir traveled to Italy during spring break 2018 to perform at venues across the country. Organizers had spent nearly two years planning for this year's trip to Europe, which has been canceled amid risks of the coronavirus.

The Shawnee Mission East choir’s planned trip to Europe over spring break was canceled Tuesday morning in the wake of increased precautionary developments in some of the trip’s destination countries.

The Harbinger, the student newspaper, reported that part of the choir’s trip was to take place in the Czech Republic, but the country announced it was closing some schools this week amid concerns over spread of COVID-19.

“[As of this point], the choir trip has been officially canceled,” choir director Ken Foley wrote to students and parents in an email. “There were developments overnight (in Europe) that changed a lot of things about our trip. It pains me to do this, but it is the responsible thing to do.”

Ken Foley, director of choirs at the school, wrote in the email that he will communicate with choir students and families when he has more information with their travel organization, WorldStrides.
