Man arrested after report that he struck woman at Overland Park apartment with handgun, left with 1-year-old child

Overland Park Police were called to investigate a reported domestic disturbance just after 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Stone Ridge Apartments in the 5000 block of Conser Street.

Recorded radio traffic states that the caller was a woman reporting that her child’s father struck her with a handgun and then left the apartment with a one-year-old. The woman told officers that she has full custody of the child. 

Johnson County Med-Act responded to the apartment and treated the woman for minor injuries.

Overland Park Police Department spokesperson Officer John Lacy confirmed that the child was located safely with the family of the suspect at a home in Kansas City, Kansas before 4 p.m. on Sunday. The child was not injured.

Kansas City, Kansas officers located and arrested the suspect a short time after the child was found. The Kansas Highway Patrol assisted in the search for the child and suspect.

The suspect, a 20-year-old Kansas City, Kansas man, remains in the custody of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office and is awaiting formal charging. 

Gerardo Gabriel Jimenez is being held in the Wyandotte County Detention Center on pending felony charges of aggravated assault and battery and kidnapping.

The man also has an open case in Johnson County District Court for a January criminal damage to property arrest. The Johnson County case was filed by Shawnee Police who arrested the man after a domestic disturbance on January 31. He bonded out of jail on February 1 according to Johnson County Court records.
