SMSD News: School communities customize building plans

No two schools in the Shawnee Mission School District are alike, but each school’s objective is the same. All Shawnee Mission schools are working to ensure each student has a personalized learning plan that will prepare them for college and careers, with the interpersonal skills they need for life success.

Each unique school community in the Shawnee Mission School District will customize and create its own plan, in line with the district strategic plan and objectives. Each school must have a plan that works specifically for the students they serve.

Recently, individuals representing each Shawnee Mission school community met at each of the five high schools across the district for a District Site Council meeting. Every school in the state of Kansas is required to have a site council, which participates in the school’s accreditation process through the Kansas Education Systems Accreditation (KESA) model. Parents, students, principals, and staff members gathered to study and plan their school’s customized school building Plan and discuss continuous improvement using the KESA model.

The District Site Council meeting started with a review of the district-wide Strategic Plan, which was developed with input from parents, teachers, staff, students, and community members. Next, Site Council members took time to study and plan around district-level and school building data related to academic performance, discipline, and individualized plans of study. Studying the data provides an honest look at the needs Shawnee Mission schools face and the work ahead for the district and individual school communities. Customized school plans, within defined parameters, are essential to ensure Shawnee Mission schools are supporting the needs of each and every student.

Following the data review, school Site Council members gathered for more school-specific conversation. They met to review school building data, monitor progress on school goals, review school improvement goals and action plans, and provide recommendations.

The input, insight, and ideas Site Council members bring to this process are essential to the continuous improvement of Shawnee Mission schools. Excellent public schools help every student achieve life success. They are not built through luck or the maintenance of normal operations. Excellent public schools are created by communities that grow together to ensure the success of every learner.
