Best Bets for the Weekend: Mission Sunflower Festival, Tiny Tots Triathlon, and live music

Summer fun is in full swing this weekend, with fun events for the whole family:

  • There’s lots of intrigue surrounding who will be performing at tonight’s Jazz Night in the Village at the Prairie Village Shops. And while we’re not sure who the headliner will be (we’ve been promised it will be “a local KC jazz band”), we do know the fantastic Lancer Jazz Band will open.
  • Friday night should be the perfect summer evening to watch Olivia Fox on the lawn at the Nerman Museum of Johnson County Community College. Three ladies join together to make up the Folk/Pop band Olivia Fox, whose sound combines classic folk instrumentation, vocals, and harmonies to modern programmed beats and synth pads.
  • The sunflower seed spittin’ contest returns as part of the Mission Sunflower Festival this weekend.

Do your dreams include a margarita bar and pancake feed? No? Just me? Either way make sure to head to downtown Mission on Friday and Saturday for the second annual Mission Sunflower Festival. Friday festivities include music, a margarita and beer garden and food trucks. Saturday will include a morning parade, pancake feed, carnival-style games, contests, bingo, a virtual reality rollercoaster and more.

  • Could there be a cuter combination of words than “Tiny Tot Triathlon“? Methinks not and the idea that they can finish the Saturday morning race via inflatable slide is just the icing on the cake. Head on over to Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park in Lenexa to catch the cuteness in action.
