The parent-teacher organizations at Shawnee Mission North and Mill Creek Elementary are receiving a prestigious honor for the strength of parent involvement at the schools.
The Shawnee Mission North High School PTSA and Mill Creek Elementary PTA are two of just three groups in the state of Kansas to earn the National PTA’s Schools of Excellence designation this year. The Eisenhower Middle School PTA in the Kansas City Kansas Public School District also earned the distinction this year. Less than 300 PTAs across the country were named National PTA Schools of Excellence.
To be recognized as a School of Excellence, school PTAs must conduct a survey to identify potential areas for improvement, identify a target goal and then develop and execute a plan to reach that goal.
At SM North, the project focused on helping families understand the Kansas College and Career Ready Standards. At Mill Creek the group worked to ensure that all families felt welcomed and included in the school community. The group increased the amount of communication in made to Mill Creek families and translated its communications into Spanish to increase their reach.
Through the program, National PTA School of Excellence honorees retain their designation for two year.
Last year, the Belinder Elementary PTA and Indian Hills Middle School PTA were named National Schools of Excellence and were the only schools in the state to do so.
