Police block off areas around Indian Hills Country Club as they search for shooter

Law enforcement agents from around the area converged on Prairie Village and Mission Hills early Saturday morning after a mentally ill man with a gun began firing.

Prairie Village police were responding to a call for service in the 3000 block of 69th Street when they encountered a man who brandished a gun and began firing.

“We have not confirmed where the shots were directed at this point,” said Sgt. Joel Porter of the Prairie Village police.

The man fled the scene on foot, and officers called for assistance. The department put out a call for “county-wide” support, and officers from Westwood, Olathe, Overland Park, Lenexa, Leawood, Shawnee, Fairway and Kansas City, Mo. responded to the scene. Outside agencies provided drones and armored vehicles to aid in the search.

Porter said the man was located and taken into custody around 6:30 a.m.

“The subject was taken into custody without incident,” said the department in a media release. “The subject was transported to an area hospital for a mental health evaluation and pending charges through the Johnson County District Attorney’s Office.”
