For a while there, it seemed like nothing but bad news on the donut front around these parts.
But this summer has been an embarrassment of donut riches!
Hurts Donut Company plans to open its first shop in the Kansas City metro area at 5 a.m. Wednesday when it unlocks the doors in the new restaurant pavilion at Ward Parkway Shopping Center on State Line.
Hurts, which opened its first shop in Springfield, Mo., back in 2013, now has 18 locations across 10 states. Seth Corless, a Kansas City native, is the co-owner of the new franchise, and says he was driven to open a shop here after the success of his first location in suburban Madison, Wis.
“We have had so much fun with the Middleton [Wis.] store, it just made sense to do a second location. Kansas City is my home. Donuts are my passion. I had to bring the two together,” Corless said.
Hurts is know for its specialty toppings, which recreate the flavors of sweet treats like birthday cake, s’mores and cotton candy.
The first 100 people through the door Wednesday will be entered into a drawing for a year’s worth of free donuts.
“Camping outside the store beginning Tuesday night is welcome and encouraged,” said the company.
It’s the third new donut shop in the greater Shawnee Mission area to open this summer.
A Leawood couple opened the first franchise of North Carolina-based Duck Donuts in the metro at Ranch Mart in June. And JoCo resident Mica Marriott opened her Marrio’s Donut Shop at 95th and Antioch in July.
Overland Park donut legend John’s Space Age Donuts closed up after 50 years in business in December 2017. And Mission’s Fluffy Fresh Donuts was sidetracked this summer by the baker’s rotator cuff injury.
