Briefly noted: SMSD teachers contract negotiations resume today; Shawnee releases name of homicide victim

Deputy superintendent Kenny Southwick is leading negotiations for the school district administration.

Negotiators will try to agree to teachers contract a day before school starts. With school set to start tomorrow, negotiating teams from the Shawnee Mission School District administration and the National Education Association – Shawnee Mission will try to come to terms on a teachers contract for the 2018-19 school year. A negotiating session is set for 3:30 p.m. today at the Center for Academic Achievement. Teachers have asked for a 1 percent across-the-board raise. We’ll be there covering the session.

Shawnee police release name of homicide victim. Shawnee police on Wednesday identified the victim of a homicide that took place in the 21900 block of W. 51st Place early Wednesday morning. The deceased is David J. Paterno, a 57 year old resident of Shawnee. Shawnee police found Paterno suffering from severe injuries when they arrived at the address to investigate a report of a physical disturbance. He was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. No suspect in the incident is in custody.
