Updates from Johnson County Community College: Campus culture spotlight

At JCCC, we redefine what it means to be a community college. Our students start out seeking a high-quality, affordable education, but quickly find we have so much more to offer. We are a home away from home – a campus where academic and personal growth collide to create a unique college experience.

Here’s how it’s done:

Experiences beyond the classroom: We know education isn’t limited to lectures and labs, which is why we offer opportunities to explore and learn throughout campus. Our students have access to more than 80 clubs and organizations, all focused on giving back, becoming career ready or having fun. Students can also participate in seven competitive athletic programs or support the teams at on-campus matches.

Student spaces: Our 234-acre campus is home to a variety of student hangouts, including:

  • Lush outdoor courtyards where students can play sports, study and relax.
  • Multiple coffee shops and dining options, such as Java Jazz and Café Tempo.
  • A Student Lounge equipped with TVs, the latest video game systems, a foosball table and more. Students can unwind, hang out with friends and meet new people.

Events: We go above and beyond to give students access to leading speakers, performers and experiences. The Carlsen Center alone attracts close to 175 events annually (have you checked out the 2018-2019 lineup?), and the CoLab hosts a mix of student, faculty and guest presentations. Our campus wide events, Cav Kickoff and Cav Craze, also give students the chance to build connections at the start and close of each school year.

According to JCCC student Laila Abu Zareefeh, “JCCC is really nice. It’s a big community college and always has a lot of activities on campus, as well as many restaurants. At JCCC, you get to know a lot of different people from everywhere and it’s so fun to learn about people’s backgrounds.”

Wellness offerings: We provide the resources students need to stay happy and healthy on campus. They enjoy free access to:

  • The Barbara Gill Lifetime Fitness Center
  • Group Fitness Classes
  • Wellness Programs
  • Wellness Lectures
  • Assessments, Personal Training and Wellness Coaching

Claudia Martin-Ayoade, a Registered Dietitian, is also available to discuss nutrition, special diet needs and more.
