Community discussion on trauma following gunfire at Johnson County camp. In the wake of the incident last week where a 10 year old set off a gun he had brought in a backpack to day camp, Johnson County Park and Recreation District and Johnson County Mental Health are putting on a community forum for parents to talk about dealing with trauma and tactics for safety. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Johnson County Arts and Heritage Center. “Whether you are a parent of a child who was there, or a parent who is concerned that the incident even occurred, please come join us,” said the parks district in a statement. You can find more information about the event here.

Shawnee Mission Park off-leash dog area to close for five weeks. The off-leash dog area at Shawnee Mission Park will close for five weeks starting Aug. 13 while contractors work on a project to add an accessible trail to the spot. “Just a friendly reminder that in addition to being potentially hazardous to both dogs and people, entering the off-leash area during this construction closure, which also includes the parking lot, will be considered trespassing,” said the parks district.
