Among the first major moves made by new Shawnee Mission Superintendent Mike Fulton is the reconfiguration of the district’s organizational chart, which he revealed to the board of education early this week.
As presented to the board Monday, the reworked structure reduces the number of direct reports to the superintendent, and organizes central office administrators under three associate superintendents. They are:
- Associate Superintendent for Leadership and Learning Michelle Hubbard
- Associate Superintendent for Human Resources Doug Sumner
- Associate Superintendent for Organizational Support Rick Atha
Last year, Hubbard, Sumner and Atha carried the title assistant superintendent and were among nine cabinet-level staff members who reported directly to interim superintendent Kenny Southwick. In addition to those three associate superintendents, Deputy Superintendent Kenny Southwick and Chief Communications Officer David Smith will report directly to Fulton this year.
Under the new structure, Christy Ziegler will report to Hubbard as assistant superintendent of personalized learning and interim director of special education; and Leigh Anne Neal will report to Hubbard as assistant superintendent of early childhood and strategic engagement.
Ed Streich, who carried the title chief academic officer last year, will now be chief of student services and report to Atha. As leader of the newly created student services department, Streich will oversee director of student and family services John McKinney and director of athletics and activities Richard Kramer.
Fulton said the objective of the reorganization was to more closely align functions that worked on similar goals and increase communication between central office administrators.
“Our goal is to connect the system and make us more interdependent in our work,” Fulton said.
