La Terraza in Shawnee — known for salsa lessons, DJs — gets formal approval for live entertainment

La Terraza
La Terraza Bar and Grill just got permission from Shawnee to have live entertainment.

A Shawnee venue that had built up a following for its salsa classes and DJs now has formal approval to host live entertainment.

City staff learned that La Terraza Bar and Grill was already hosting live entertainment “after an incident that occurred during a live event that brought attention to the restaurant,” city staff wrote to the planning commission in a June 18 memo.

La Terraza was the site of a shooting that took place in the early morning hours of April 22. A man who had been asked to leave after a bar fight returned and shot into the crowded restaurant. Four people, including the shooter, were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Staff had made contact with the owner, Cristian Martinez, after the city learned the venue had already been hosting live entertainment and informed him of the need for a permit. Martinez discontinued live entertainment and filed the special permit application.

The requested special use permit allows live entertainment, including a disc jockey, karaoke, live singing and salsa dance instruction, at its location 10923 Shawnee Mission Parkway.

“No incidents or issues have been reported since that time,” staff indicated in the report, adding that in the past, staff had received no noise complaints about the business.

The Shawnee council approved in a 5-0 vote during its Monday meeting the planning commission’s unanimous recommendation to grant the special permit.

The hours requested for the live entertainment are from 7 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Thursday through Sunday. Staff wrote that the live entertainment “should not cause a detrimental effect to surrounding property owners” because the live entertainment will be indoors.

“However, if noise or vibration becomes an issue in the future, the owner shall immediately make structural improvements to the facility to soundproof the building,” staff wrote.

La Terraza first opened in January 2017, according to Shawnee city records.

Council members Justin Adrian, Lindsey Constance and Mickey Sandifer were absent for the vote.
