Man killed after exchanging gunfire with Overland Park police was wanted for murder in Missouri

UPDATED 2:48 p.m.: Overland Park police said this afternoon that the man critically injured in the shootout has died. They identified him as Charles Tyrone Webb, 43. Webb was wanted in connection with a murder that took place in Columbia, Mo. in early May. Police there had issued a warrant for his arrest and he was considered armed and dangerous.

ORIGINAL: A man is in critical condition this morning after engaging in a shootout with Overland Park police.

Police say they received multiple calls to 911 reporting shots fired in the vicinity of 79th Street and Grant around 1 a.m. Upon arriving on the scene, officers identified the suspect, who fired several rounds at them. The officers then engaged the suspect with gunfire, striking him.

Police say the man was transported to a local hospital and is in critical condition. Neither of the police officers involved were injured in the shooting.

As is policy in all officer involved shootings, the two officers involved were automatically placed on administrative leave. The incident will be investigated by the Johnson County Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Team.
