Fireworks arson does $20,000 damage to new Sapling Grove Park shelter, bathroom

Sapling Grove Park Shelter Arson
The shelter was just installed earlier this year.

A picnic shelter and bathroom just completed earlier this year as part of a $600,000 improvement project at Sapling Grove Park in Overland Park suffered serious damage in an arson incident overnight.

Overland Park police say fireworks set off in the shelter and restroom have caused approximately $20,000 in damages. Photos from the scene released by police show the ceiling of the shelter roof charred black, two Roman candles wedged into a bathroom stall door handle, and what appeared to be a trashcan melted by fire:

Police say that a witness observed five males running eastbound from the shelter around the time of the fire, which occurred just before 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Overland Park police at 913-327-5700 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
