Johnson County governments need to encourage people of different backgrounds to serve in office, says Star editorial board. In response to our story last week regarding the make up of local governing bodies, the Kansas City Star editorial board is out with a piece calling for increased effort to bring people of more diverse backgrounds into public service roles. “It’s not that older white men haven’t contributed greatly to Johnson County. Many have been great visionaries. But Johnson County, like the nation, is expected to become even more diverse, and local governments should follow suit,” they wrote. “Johnson County will need to begin nurturing and encouraging a wider range of leaders to truly be reflective of the people who call the area home.”
Overland Park City Manager Bill Ebel tapped to lead Regional Homeland Security Coordinating Committee. The Mid-America Regional Council had appointed Overland Park City Manager Bill Ebel to co-chair the Regional Homeland Security Coordinating Committee, which oversees coordination efforts for emergency preparedness. Ebel replaces former county manager Hannes Zacharias in the role. Stephen Arbo, city manager of Lee’s Summit, is the other co-chair.
Sporting KC selects Roeland Park native Eric Dick in first round of MLS draft. Sporting Kansas City selected goalkeeper Eric Dick, who is originally from Roeland Park, in the first round of the MLS draft in Philadelphia last week.
