Lenexa releases 2018 calendar, sets dates for Great BBQ Battle, Moonlight Bike Ride, Spinach Festival and more

Lenexa’s Parks and Recreation department this week released its 2018 events calendar, including high-profile events like the city’s art fair, the Great Lenexa BBQ Battle and the annual Spinach Festival.

  • Cupid’s Gems Artisan Jewelry Show
    Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    Come enjoy the day with your girlfriends, sisters or plan a mother-daughter outing. Browse the wonderful handcrafted jewelry, shop for gifts or find a new treasure for yourself.   • Lenexa Art Fair

    Join us for the fifth annual Lenexa Art Fair, a juried exhibit featuring dozens of fine artists.   • Latino Art Bravisimo
    June 8 through July 14, 2017, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    Latino Art Bravisimo is an exciting celebration of art, cultural diversity and community. This juried art show features high quality two- and three-dimensional pieces created by talented Latino artists from the Kansas City metro area. The 15th annual show is hosted by the Lenexa Arts Council and the City of Lenexa. Free admission.
  • Get Outdoors Lenexa

    Bring the entire family — from toddlers to grandparents — to Black Hoof Park for an exciting morning of outdoor fun, fitness and safety.     The fun begins Friday as 185 teams arrive with some of the most unique smoking contraptions imaginable. The real contest begins Saturday as the judging tent buzzes with activity preparing for the first barbeque samples to arrive at noon. Judges have the difficult task of identifying the best barbeque among various categories, including brisket, pork, ribs, sausage, chicken and miscellaneous. Friday night admission is $5 for adults and free for children under age 12; Saturday admission is free. Teams are not required to give samples to the public.
  • Lenexa Freedom Run
    Wednesday, July 4, 2018, 7 a.m.
    Old Town Lenexa, Santa Fe Trail Drive and Pflumm Road, Lenexa, KS 66215
    Each year, runners and walkers of all activity levels participate in this family-friendly event. Participants may choose the 5K course or 10K course, which are flat and fully traffic controlled. Awards are given in 15 categories. About 1,600 runners participate in this fun celebration of our country’s independence. Registration fees vary depending on registration date.
  • Community Days Parade

    The annual Lenexa Community Days Parade is a hometown tradition that draws thousands of spectators to Old Town Lenexa to celebrate Independence Day. Friends and family gather along the parade route to watch floats, bands, antique cars and more. Free admission.

  • Moonlight Bike Ride
    Saturday, July 21, 2018, 10 p.m.
    Santa Fe Trail Drive west of Pflumm Road, Lenexa, KS 66215
    Riders will enjoy the 9-mile, closed-course route at night down 95th Street and a unique ride through the Meritex caves. The course ends back near Old Town. Early-bird registration is $20 for adults and $15 for children age 12 and under. Following the bike ride, participants can stay for a late-night pancake breakfast for a fee.

    Enjoy a day of fun with your dog. Tails on the Trails features pet-centered vendor booths, dog swims, a pet talent show and pet safety demonstrations. Free admission to festival; dog swims are $5 per session if registered in advance and $8 at the door.
  • Lenexa Spinach Festival

    It’s a festive day of food, music, entertainment, arts and antique vendors, a recipe contest, cooking demonstrations, history, children’s activities and so much more. One of the main attractions is the art, fine craft and antique show, featuring a wonderful variety of items such as pottery, fused glass, repurposed furniture and items, jewelry, baskets, wood items, metal garden art, quilts, clothing, doll clothes and accessories, antiques and vintage items.   • Lenexa Chili Challenge

    Saturday, October 20, 2018, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    About 200 teams compete in chili, salsa and hot wings contests. Chili contestants arrive Friday afternoon to begin setting up their booths. The festivities include live music and entertainment, fireworks, games and activities for all ages. The contest and public tastings are Saturday. Free admission.
  • Enchanted Forest
    Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

    Lenexa’s Enchanted Forest has something to delight even the smallest Halloween revelers. For one night in October, the park is transformed into the Enchanted Forest. Visitors will enjoy free activities including performances by marionette puppets, magicians and singers along the trail around Rose’s Pond and fun photos in the photo booth. Stroll the seasonal displays, visit friendly characters and enjoy performances at your leisure. Free admission.
  • Sar-Ko Aglow
    Friday, Nov. 30, 2018, 6 to 7 p.m.
    Park to stay lit through early January

    Bundle up and enjoy a stroll through the park while taking in the spectacular lights, sipping hot cocoa and listening to carolers. Santa will also be on hand to hear children’s holiday wishes. Holiday lights will officially be switched on at 6 p.m. Free admission.
