Friends and family of former SM South student Elizabeth Richards, 19, are mourning the loss of the mother of a young son.
Police found Richards’ body in a south Kansas City, Mo., home around 11 a.m. Saturday. She died of a gunshot wound.
Her brother, Matt, posted a notice on the website GoFundMe Monday indicating that Richards’ ex-boyfriend and the father of her son Jay had been the killer.
“On the morning of Saturday January 6th my little sister Liz was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend/father to her child,” Matt wrote. “That morning our sweet baby Jay lost his mother.”
Matt has established a campaign in an effort to raise $10,000 for Liz’s funeral as well as support for her son. Here’s more from his GoFundMe post:
In this tragic turn of events my mom is taken by not only overwhelming grief but is now taking guardianship of Jay as she’s basically played the role as co-parent for the entirety of his life. Anyone that knows my mom knows that she is one of the most loving, compassionate, selfless, and among the strongest people you could ever meet, and I thank god every day for her. Right now we are struggling with planning a future and covering expenses for Jay while also figuring out how to fund my little sisters funeral.
Officers who responded to the scene of the shooting Saturday also found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Police have not released that man’s identity.
