Shoppers and staff inside the Lenexa Costco crowded with Thanksgiving weekend holiday shoppers Sunday morning found themselves fleeing the scene of an active shooting.

Around 11 a.m. Sunday, Lenexa police received a report of a man yelling and waving a gun inside the store. When officers arrived on the scene, they found that the suspect had been fatally shot by an off-duty Kansas City, Kan., police officer. No one else was killed or injured in the incident, and police say they believe the deceased man was the only one involved in the incident.

Police from several neighboring Johnson County cities arrived shortly after the shooting to help process the scene, with officers interviewing as many people who were inside the store as they could contact. Police blocked off the parking lot during the shooting investigation, which prevented shoppers from driving their cars away from the store until just before 5 p.m. Officers from the Shawnee, Overland Park, Prairie Village and Olathe police departments were among those to assist Lenexa on the scene.

Investigators say they have made a preliminary identification of the man who was brandishing the gun, but they have not released his name as of early Monday morning.

Patrons inside the store at the time of the shooting say they heard as many as eight shots fired.
