Shawnee Mission East seniors Parker Shirling and Bria Foley are the recipients of this year’s Art Newcomer Awards, which provide scholarships of $1,000 to a male and a female student each year. The awards are the highest honor that can be given to an SM East student athlete.
The awards, named in honor of longtime SM East Athletic Director Dr. Art Newcomer, are given to students who demonstrate excellence both on and off the field.
Foley competed in cross county and soccer during her four years at the school. She was also involved in the chamber singers, school musicals and SHARE. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society and is a Kansas Honors Scholar.
Shirling played football and competed in track and field during his high school career. He was involved in the math club and SHARE and is an International Baccalaureate candidate. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society and is a Kanas Honors Scholar.
