Macaroni Grill shuts its doors in Overland Park as Billy Sims BBQ plans to open just across the parking lot

A fixture of the northern Overland Park dining scene since the early 1990s has closed its doors.

Romano’s Macaroni Grill, which had operated in the Regency Park center just south of 91st Street and Metcalf Avenue since 1991, abruptly closed the last week of April. The Italian chain has dozens of locations across the U.S., but with the shuttering of the Metcalf location it no longer has any restaurants in Kansas. It also does not have any locations in Missouri.

Workers didn’t waste any time stripping the building of its branding, taking the familiar sign above the entrance down days after the closure. A sign on the door simply reads “Sorry. This location has closed.”

As Regency Park loses one restaurant, though, another is preparing to open. The metro’s first Billy Sims BBQ restaurant is set to open in the former Pei Wei Asian Diner space just across the parking lot from the old Macaroni Grill building as soon as this month.
