Cindy Neighbor is facing a challenge from Brian Koon for the Shawnee Mission Board of Education

Shawnee Mission School Board candidate Brian Koon has taken a leave of absence from his position as a lobbyist for Kansas Families for Education as he pursues the elected office. And KFE has issued a statement clarifying its position in the race.

Board president John Martellaro sent the note below to us yesterday:

In the wake of recent statements by Shawnee Mission School Board candidate Brian Koon to the Post, we wish to clarify our organization’s stance with regard to that race.

In keeping with longstanding practice at Kansas Families for Education, Brian Koon has requested a leave of absence from our board for the duration of his campaign. KFE considers both Brian Koon and Cindy Neighbor to be strong, steadfast supporters of public education, and we will not be making an endorsement in that particular race.

KFE has been a longtime supporter of Cindy Neighbor as a strong and effective advocate for our schools and families in Topeka, and we remain deeply appreciative of her service. Brian’s comments about Cindy, past and future, should be viewed as his opinions and statements as an individual, and not representing KFE as an organization.
