The League of Kansas Municipalities’ annual comparison of city tax rates again paints a favorable picture of the tax burden on residents of Prairie Village and Overland Park

Among the 27 cities of the first class in the state, Overland Park has by far the lowest total city mill levy at 13.8. Prairie Village, which has a much smaller base with just 12 percent of Overland Park’s population, comes in at second with 19.471 city mills.

When the mill levies of other taxing entities — like counties, school districts and fire districts — are factored into the total, Prairie Village falls from second to third, behind Overland Park at 115.546 mills and Wichita at 117.201 mills. Prairie Village’s total mills levied in the city by all taxing units is 123.760.

Leawood, which is also a city of the first class, came in fifth in the category with a total mill rate of 127.701.

The highest tax rate among cities of the first class was in Parsons, where residents pay a rate of 211.545 mills

To be listed among cities of the first class, a city must have a population of 15,000 or more.
