Prairie Village-based Care Haven homes recently opened its sixth residential facility for people living with dementia.

The new home is located near I-435 and Roe Avenue in Overland Park. Founded in 2004, Care Haven now operates four homes in OP and two in Leawood. With space for 49 residents in its “home-plus homes,” it is now the largest provider of its kind in the county. The new home was remodeled to provide a “a warm, family-style setting, one that might remind you of your own home,” said Neil Barnett, Care Haven’s founder.

Care Haven provides on-site staffing by people trained in caring for persons with dementia. Barnett said he’s made high staffing levels a priority. He first got interested in Alzheimer’s care when his grandmother was diagnosed with the disease more than four decades ago. Watching the disease progress in his grandmother, he developed an appreciation for the extra compassion and care required to provide a calm, safe environment for people with dementia.

“Those who move in are…impressed by the staffing levels – among the highest in the dementia care field,” Barnett said. “That translates into more individual attention and better care.”

Care Haven Homes acquired its fifth home in north Leawood two years ago, taking over an operation from A New Day. Care Haven now employees 65 people.
