Trailwood, Briarwood students get sneak peak at new buildings today. It’s a big day for students at Trailwood and Briarwood Elementaries, who will for the first time today get to enter their new school buildings, which have been under construction since fall of 2015. The students will be allowed into the building in the afternoon to move some of their supplies in and get a look at the new facilities before they’re dismissed for winter break. Students will begin attending classes in the buildings full-time when classes convene for the spring semester.

Shawnee Mission East grad named K-State Athlete of the Week. SM East graduate Molly Ross, who participated on the Lancer track and field team before heading to college to row, was named Student Athlete of the Week at Kansas State University last week. Ross was recognized at a Wildcats basketball game. She is a Mechanical Engineering major with a 3.8 grade point average.

Overland park council approves creation of financial incentives district for Brookridge. Before a packed room on Monday, the Overland Park City Council approved the creation of tax increment financing and STAR bond districts for a new mixed-use development on the site of the current Brookridge golf course. Superintendent Jim Hinson told members of the school board Monday that should the council approve the creation of the districts, the school district will be exploring whether the project meets the guidelines it established for TIF projects earlier this year. Shawnee Mission holds veto power over the creation of TIF districts, and now has 30 days to decided whether or not to exercise that power.
