A grant from the Early Education Funders Collaborative through the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation will help the Shawnee Mission School District better prepare student to make the transition into kindergarten, district leader say.
The district announced this week that it had received a commitment of $373,508 from the organization to support Jump Start to Learning, the district’s summer early childhood program that focuses on preparing students for their first year in school. Last year, more than 200 student participated in the program, which provides them chances to meet with their kindergarten teacher and classmates to get them acclimated to the new environment.
“We know that the early years are a critical time for brain development for children,” said district Superintendent Jim Hinson in a statement. “This funding will allow us to build an educational foundation for students that will strengthen their skills and help each student learn and achieve at his or her personal best.”
