Shawnee man who fatally injured pregnant woman while fleeing traffic stop last winter sentenced Monday. A man who fled Prairie Village police last January and struck a car at 75th and Metcalf, fatally injuring a pregnant woman passenger, has been sentenced to 12 years and 5 months in Johnson County District Court. Raphael Sherman pled guilty to one count of second degree murder and three counts of aggravated battery. On Jan. 10, Sherman, 21, was driving in Prairie Village when an officer tried to pull him over for a traffic violation, according to prosecutors. Sherman sped away and was westbound on Metcalf when he ran a red light, striking a Chevy Silverado truck and a Toyota Sienna minivan. Denise Lopez, 25, was a passenger in the truck. She was 39 weeks pregnant and died as a result of her injuries in the crash. Her baby’s life was saved through medical intervention at the hospital.
Kansas City, Kan., man charged in Johnson County with aggravated battery on a Merriam police officer Thanksgiving night. WDAF-TV Fox 4 is reporting a 21-year-old man was arrested after he tried to use his car to attack a Merriam police officer.
Kappa Kappa Gamma holding 65th annual Holiday Homes Tour. Kappa Kappa Gamma will be holding its annual Holiday Homes Tour Dec. 7 and 8 to raise money for the Growing Futures Early Education Center, formerly Head Start of Shawnee Mission. Four homes, two in Kansas City and two in Mission Hills, will be open for touring. The event has raised more than $2 million for area non-profits and the Kappa Foundation since its beginning.
