Smoothie King, a New Orleans-based chain that specializes in “function” based blended drinks to fit a variety of dietary needs, is opening its ninth franchise in the metro this Monday in Mission at Johnson Drive and Riggs Avenue.

“All of our smoothies are function-based,” said Steve Shields, business development manager for Smoothie King. “Each has a purpose. It’s not a refreshment, it’s a meal replacement. We based the brand on a healthy and active lifestyle.”

Those purposes may include helping people gain or lose weight, or provide a nutritious meal after a good workout, but the flavors do sound refreshing: Angel Food, strawberry-banana combo, lean one chocolate and nutty super-grain smooth among them.

Pattie Cali, the owner of the new franchise opening in Mission, said this is her four location in the metro area, the other three are in the Northland.

“We love the brand,” she said. “It’s a healthy alternative to fast food. All our smoothies have all natural ingredients.”

She said Mission was chosen because it was a good location to continue to build the brand in the Kansas City area. Shields said Smoothie King ultimately would like to have 25 outlets in the metro.

Smoothie King currently has more than 800 locations in 33 states nationwide. The franchise also offers a number of nutritious retail products, including sports beverages, energy bars and vitamin supplements.

Mission will be the ninth location in the metro for Smoothie King.
