Shawnee Mission North kicker Oscar Aguilar played hero on Friday night as his left foot cemented a comeback win and a regional championship for the Indians.

Trailing by eight with less than four minutes to play, senior quarterback Will Schneider heaved an 80-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Noah Laird. The Indians elected to go for two and converted as senior Marcos Garcia rumbled into the end zone.

The Indians would eventually get the ball back and Schneider would help set up Aguilar’s 26-yard try with three seconds left to lift SM North to a 52-49 victory.

The regional championship is the first for the Indians since 2000 when they finished the season 9-2.

The Indians avenged a Week 3 52-26 loss to Lawrence and returned the favor by ending the Chesty Lions’ season as Lawrence ended SM North’s season with a 56-32 outcome.

SM North will face SM East in the Class 6A quarterfinals at SM North District Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
