Shawnee Mission East fought back from a two-goal deficit to beat Blue Valley Northwest 3-2 in overtime Thursday evening and win the regional championship.
The win puts the Lancers one game away from their first trip to the state semifinals since 2012.
Blue Valley Northwest controlled much of the first half and went up 1-0 26 minutes into the game. The Huskies scored again shortly after halftime, but junior Tommy Nelson answered with a header goal off a free kick from senior Oliver Bihuniak with 25 minutes to play.
The Lancers tied the game three minutes later when senior Clayton Phillips scored after following up a shot from Nelson. The remainder of regulation saw the Lancers press with momentum and the Huskies create some chances of their own.
Seven minutes into overtime, SM East won a free kick when senior Stanley Morantz was tripped while dribbling into the penalty box. With the free kick awarded on the penalty line, Bihuniak shot the ball up and over the defendants’ wall and into the side netting for the golden goal victory.
