Hundreds participate in Fire Safety Open House. The Overland Park Fire Department kicked off National Fire Safety Week on Saturday with an open house at its fire training center, 12401 Hemlock St. Participants learned about how to use fire extinguishers and cooking safety. The department is encouraging people to check that they have working smoke alarms this week.

NEJC native wins accounting scholarship. Anne Willman, a NEJC native now studying accounting at Kansas State University, has been named the recipient of a scholarship from the Public Accountant’s Association of Kansas. To qualify for the scholarship from the association’s Floyd Lietz Memorial Scholarship Fund, students must be an upperclassman with a grade point average of 3.0 or above.

Shawnee Mission Board of Education to hold special meeting Tuesday to consider teacher’s pact. The SMSD school board has scheduled a special meeting Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. to consider a labor agreement between the board and the teacher’s union,NEA-SM. The meeting will be at the McEachen Adinistrative Center, 7235 Antioch.

Roeland Park police to join statewide effort for children seat-belt safety. Starting on Halloween, October 31 through November 4, law enforcement across Kansas will be extra-vigilant when patrolling around schools to warn drivers and passengers regarding the importance of using seat belts while in their vehicles.
