Nathan Nogelmeier has been chosen to be the new city administrator for Fairway, replacing Kathy Axelson who’s held the job for 2 1/2 years.
Axelson, who is taking early retirement for personal reasons, is pleased the City Council chose Nogelmeier for the position. He has been parks and recreation director since 2005.
“I’m very happy the city has offered the position to Nathan,” she said. “He’s shined, most recently with our taking over operation of the Shawnee Indian Mission. That will be a wonderful opportunity to bring that site back to life.”
Axelson said her biggest accomplishment in office was the successful effort to raise the sales tax to pay for renovation of the Fairway pool and acquisition of a new public works facility.
“I’m proud of these projects and our fantastic staff,” she said.
As part of Nogelmeier promotion, the City Council also is separating the city administrator and city clerk positions. Axelson had both roles. Instead, the assistant city clerk will now be assuming those responsibilities.
Nogelmeier is a native of Parker, S.D. and a graduate of South Dakota State University. He started working part-time for Fairway in 2003 before becoming parks director.
He anticipates a smooth transition to the new job.
“Being administrator brings a whole new element of challenges,” he said, “but I feel I have a fair understanding of all the responsibilities.”
