Brookwood Elementary School in Leawood will be demolished after this school year and replaced with a new building that’s expected to be completed by December 2018.

The Shawnee Mission School Board approved the project, estimated to cost about $18 million, at its meeting Monday.

During construction, students will attend class at Indian Creek Technology Center, 4401 W. 103rd St. The school enrolls about 370 students.

Brookwood was built at 3411 W. 103rd St. in 1960 and its current square footage is 47,610. Design work on the new building has not begun, but it’s expected to be significantly larger, from 65,000- to 73,000 square feet.

Deputy Superintendent Kenny Southwick told the board new construction was required in part to create a more efficient building with a separate cafeteria and gymnasium, and to provide access for people with disabilities.
