Seven SM East students named National Merit semifinalists; Shawnee Mission district has 14 qualifiers

SM East journalists took home a slew of Quill and Scroll awards.

The Shawnee Mission School District has 14 students who have been named semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship program. Seven of those students attend SM East.

The distinction is based on their performance on the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The SM East students who were named semifinalists include:

  • Haley J. Bell
  • Coleman E. Brockmeier
  • Kate M. Haefele
  • Peter R. Haynes
  • Katherine A. Kuhlman
  • Eli H. Kurlbaum
  • Yashi Wang

Less than 1 percent of the students who take the PSAT every year are named National Merit semifinalists. The National Merit organization will announce the recipients of $33 million worth of college scholarships through the program later this spring.

SM Northwest had two qualifiers, SM South had one and SM West had four. Last year, SM East had three semifinalists. The five Blue Valley high schools combined for 43 semifinalists this year.
