Festive weekend on tap for Mission includes Battle of the Brisket, sidewalk sales, art at the Farmers Market

The Sylvester Powell Community Center parking lots will be luring visitors with the savory scent of barbecue this weekend, the calling card of the Battle of the Brisket 2016 State Championship BBQ Contest.

The annual event is the centerpiece for a festive weekend in Mission that also includes a sidewalk sale put on by merchants along nearby Johnson Drive and a special arts-themed edition of the Farmers Market.

The activities at the Sylvester Powell Center, 6200 Martway St., begin Friday at 4 p.m and last until 10:30 p.m. Food will be provided by Johnny’s BBQ and the St. Michael’s Men in Ministry Catfish.

Music by Finnegan’s Crossing goes from 6- to 7:30 p.m. and then The Instamatics will play from 8:30- to 10:30 p.m. Throughout the evening and night 40 barbecue teams will be working their smokers.

On Saturday, Chris Cakes Pancake Breakfast will be served from 8- to 11 a.m., cost is $5. Tractors, Trucks and More Tough-A-Truck will go from 8- to 11 a.m., and at 3:15 p.m., the winners of the Battle of the Brisket will be revealed.

A special Arts and Crafts at the Market event will be at the Farmers Market, 5613 Johnson Drive. Five arts and craft vendors will join the usual line-up of fresh food from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The last Farmers Market of the season will be Sept. 24.

Finally, participating merchants along Johnson Drive will be holding a sidewalk sale of their merchandise. Normal store hours will be in place.
