The SM East Lancers balanced sound defending and a creative offense to win their second straight KA-MO Tournament championship Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Lee’s Summit North.

The first-half scores and assists all came from the Lancers’ returning seniors. Clayton Phillips scored first on a pass from Oliver Bihuniak. Shortly before halftime, after threatening the opposing keeper with long throw-ins, Stanley Morantz found senior Grayson Rapp, who blasted a shot to the roof of the net.

Lee’s Summit North pulled a goal back in the second half.  But with seven minutes to play, the Lancers sealed the victory when Morantz stole the ball in the offensive half and junior Tommy Nelson laid the ball off to Bihuniak, who dribbled through the defense and slid the ball past the keeper.

East starts league play at 7 p.m. Tuesday when they play rival SM South at the Shawnee Mission Soccer Complex.
