Rotary club work day

Shawnee Mission Rotary, Mission Project clear lot. Nine Rotarians and four members of The Mission Project worked Saturday morning to clear brush and limbs from the slope along Metcalf Avenue at Herald Corner. They also painted trash cans, and removed litter. The site had been planned for a new apartment complex. The project was led by the city’s neighborhood services department. Shawnee Mission Rotary Club Past President Mark Lieb says the project brings real satisfaction. “It’s nice to make a real difference and to see where you’ve been. And it’s always great to partner with The Mission Project.” The club meets Wednesdays at Sylvester Powell Community Center.

Merriam woman at Walmart during shooting. A Merriam woman was inside the Shawnee Walmart during a shooting in the parking lot that left one robbery suspect dead. She told The Kansas City Star that she did not know about the shooting at the time but noticed the store had emptied. Two alleged robbers attacked a woman with an infant in the parking lot, shot a Good Samaritan who intervened and then one of the suspected robbers was shot and killed by a second Good Samaritan. Antioch Library closed all week. The Antioch Branch of the Johnson County Library at Antioch and Shawnee Mission Parkway in Merriam will be closed all this week for repairs to a sewer line. The problem with the sewer line was discovered Friday afternoon. All other branch libraries will be open as usual.

Teen council deadline today. Today at 5 p.m. is the deadline for students interested in applying for the Prairie Village Teen Council. Letters of recommendation can be submitted as late as Wednesday.

SM North falls to Lawrence. Lawrence High School stopped the SM North attack Friday night with a 52-26 victory in Lawrence. The Lions made a point of trying to swarm SM North’s highly regarded quarterback Will Schneider. [Lawrence High blitzes SM North, 52-26 – Lawrence Journal World]

Johnson County deputy killed in crash. A Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputy was killed early Sunday morning after making a traffic stop on northbound U.S. 69 near 143rd Street. A second driver struck the rear of Deputy Brandon Collins car after he had initiated the stop. The accident occurred at 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Mission police warn of email scam. The Mission Police Department received a call from a resident who said she had received an email from someone identifying themselves as from the Mission police. The email said she owed money for an unpaid traffic ticket and contained a link to make the payment. The email is a scam. Neither the department nor the courts solicit payments by email. Anyone else who has received a similar email is encouraged to contact the department.
