Westwood police this morning were called to a house in the 4900 block of Rainbow Blvd. regarding an older military grade shell.

Westwood Police Chief Greg O’Halloran said the 37mm shell had apparently been in the family for years, but they did not know the origin. Police did not believe the shell to be armed but could not be certain so they called in the Overland Park Police Bomb Squad.

The bomb squad inspected the shell by x-ray and did not believe it to be active. Since they could not be certain, they removed the shell in a protective container. They will meet with military representatives to dispose of it properly.

Police did not evacuate anyone and the homeowner was cooperative with the removal.
