Only five days after George Gates retired from Prairie Village Animal Hospital, he was diagnosed with cancer. Gates was well known for decades to pet owners in northeast Johnson County.

Gates was a veterinarian and owner of the animal hospital in Corinth Square from 1971 until he retired on July 22. Gates died on Sept. 1.

Gates and his wife, Pam, also co-owned Land of Paws with his veterinary partner Mark Daly and his wife.

“Some of my earliest memories are of playing in the basement of the old animal hospital,” said his son, John.

“It always made me so proud when a classmate at Corinth or Cure of Ars would tell me about a good experience they had with my dad at the clinic,” said another son, Jim.

Gates is survived by his three sons, Michael, John and Jim, and his wife. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. today at Church of the Resurrection in Leawood.
