Crews are in the process of preparing the ground for the installation of a new, larger cell phone tower on the fire department property at 63rd Street and Mission Road.

The plan, approved by the Prairie Village City Council back in December 2015, will allow the tower site to accommodate signal carrier equipment for four providers. The current tower can accommodate just two.

The new tower will be the same height as the existing pole, but will be considerably fatter.

Prairie Village Building Official Mitch Dringman said construction plans call for the crew to leave the original tower intact and operation until the new tower is up and running.
