Police arrest 29-year-old, charge him with strangling former SM North student

plaque1Police on Thursday arrested 29-year-old Carlos A. Gallegos and charged him with first-degree murder in the death of Mission resident Monica J. Chavira.

Chavira was found dead at the Oak Tree Inn at 501 Southwest Blvd. in Kansas City, Kan., around 7 p.m. Tuesday evening. A former SM North student, Chavira, 18, withdrew from the Shawnee Mission School District in March 2015.

Gallegos was arrested in Kansas City, Mo., and is being held in the Jackson County Detention Center. There will be a hearing to determine whether he is extradited across the state line to Kansas or not. His bond has been set at $1 million in the Wyandotte County case.

Gallegos pleaded guilty to traffic charges of driving without a license in a Johnson County case from November 2015.
